Mauritius isn't a large island, so getting around isn't difficult. You can hire a car or motorbike cheaply. Car is most convenient, but it's also worth trying out the local buses. They are a fun and cheap way to explore the island.
Mauritius is regarded as a safe destination, with crime mainly resulting from petty crime. You just need to follow the usual rules such as keep belongings on you etc.
