Any trip to Lisbon must include a visit to the Sanctuary of Fátima, where the Blessed Virgin miraculously appeared to three peasant children in 1916-17, and to Óbidos, a perfectly preserved medieval village.
Proceed via minivan to Fátima to visit the Sanctuary, one of the world’s most important Catholic pilgrimage sites, with approximately 5 million visitors each year. Awaiting you at Capelinha das Aparições, the heart of the sanctuary is the exact spot where the Blessed Virgin appeared to three children in May 1917. You continue to Monumento ao Sagrado Coração de Jesus (Sacred Heart of Jesus), whose waters are said to have been sanctified by the Blessed Virgin herself. Next, you discover the stunning 14th century Batalha Monastery, the most significant symbol of the Avis Dynasty.
On your way to the fishing town of Nazaré, you’ll stop at the top of the cliffs for breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean.
Post lunch, relish the sea breeze as you’re driven along the Atlantic Coast. You’ll visit the lovely village of Óbidos, complete with narrow streets, castle walls and handicraft shops. This postcard-perfect village is so well preserved that you’ll feel as if you’re stepping back in time. A delicious treat, the famous Ginja liqueur in a chocolate cup, is yours for the sampling.
