Overview

Take a trip to the Cu Chi Tunnels and discover some lesser known facts about the Vietnam War. Situated 30 miles northwest of Ho Chi Minh City, the tunnel network was home to around 10,000 troops of the Northern Army (Viet Minh, and later Viet Cong) who lived underground for several years. It took about 25 years to build this underground ‘city’ that has living rooms, kitchens, hospitals, schools, meeting rooms, weapon factories, storage facilities and command centers!

At the peak of the Vietnam War, large vents were installed to hear helicopters approaching and smaller vents for ventilation, which included several hidden trap doors.

Enjoy the unique experience of seeing what underground life was during the Vietnam War.

Itinerary

  • Please make your way to the front entrance of the Central Post Office - 2 Cong Xa Paris Street, District 1 (next to Notre Dame Cathedral. An English-speaking guide will accompany you on this tour. Leaving the hustle and bustle of Ho Chi Minh City behind journey 2 ½ hours west towards the Cambodian border towards the Cu Chi Tunnels. The Cu Chi tunnels were built by local fighters during the Indochina conflict as a base from which the Viet Cong could operate from close to the Southern Vietnamese capital. Life was difficult for the inhabitants and to protect against outside intruders bobby traps were laid throughout the complex. Today the Vietnamese government has preserved approximately 75 kilometres of the tunnels as a memorial park. In some areas tunnels have been widened and low powered lights installed so that tourists can now fit through the complex. Your local guide will take you on a fascinating trip around the Cu Chi Tunnels where you will learn more about the conditions the people lived in, the hardships they faced and the amazing ingenuity employed to maintain life in the tunnels. Walk past huge bomb craters, evidence of the heavy bombing campaigns in the region during the Indochina conflict. Discover hidden entrances right beneath your feet, wander past tiny little chimneys in the ground that dispersed smoke from the underground kitchens. Sample some of the simple cuisine that local fighters would have survived on and have an opportunity to venture into the tunnels and explore the complex. At the end of this memorable excursion, you will be dropped off at your centrally located hotel in Ho Chi Minh City.

Light and comfortable clothing is recommended with shoes appropriate for walking in the tunnels.

While packing for your vacation in Vietnam, please remember that dressing standards are quite conservative throughout the country. You will have to make sure that your shoulders and knees are covered at all times, and wear modest clothing even while swimming in certain regions. Singlets, tank tops and topless sunbathing will have to be given a miss. Loose, lightweight, long clothing is a good choice as it is both respectful and extremely comfortable in the predominantly hot Asian climate. Religious sites usually require men to wear full trousers and women to wear a long skirt or sarong while entering.

This activity is adults (and older children) only. Little ones under the age of 6 years will have to sit this one out, we’re afraid.

If you are coming with your child aged 6 - 11, please remember to specifically mention ‘child’ while booking the tour.
