Overview

Leave the hustle and bustle of the city behind and escape to the glorious mountain region of Las Alpujarras. In this remote area of pretty villages and whitewashed houses, time seems suspended and life goes on much the same as it has for centuries.

Learn the history of the region – how it was the last refuge of the Moors who remained here long after they had been chased out of Granada. Discover how the Moorish legacy lingers in the architecture of the houses and the irrigation channels cut into the hillsides.

Discover this majestic scenery and picturesque villages. Walk a bit, stop for lunch, enjoy a peaceful place and discover traditions from the past. Behold the stunning mountains in the distance. Have a delightful local lunch. The Alpujarras is one of the richest botanical enclaves of Europe. Explore  the picturesque villages led by a professional guide, enjoy the rural scenery and discover handmade products such as large doilers, straw baskets and colorful carpets.

The tour covers:

  • Lanjaron
  • Caratunas, Pampaneira and Pitres
  • Portugos: Visit Fuente Agria (Fountain of Sourness), the crystal clear mineral waters flow through the Sierra Nevada
  • Trevelez: The highest village in Spain and widely known for its exquisite Iberian hams, enjoy a tasting of locally made products in Trevelez.
  • Bubion and Capileira: dominating from its height the valley of Barranco del Poqueira is a wonderful, quiet place where you can have the traditional Alpujarreño lunch.

You can also opt for this tour without lunch or as a private group tour.

Itinerary

  • Leave Granada for the day to travel into the beautiful and remote mountain region of Alpujarras. In the wettest parts, where rivers run down from the Sierra Nevada, you can see orchards full of fruit trees especially grape vines, oranges, lemons, persimmons, figs and almonds. The area also boasts an incredible variety of wild flowers. You will visit Lanjaron, a spa town known for its chalybeate (iron-rich) water. Bottles of Lanjaron mineral water are sold all over Spain. The town also has a ruined castle and has earned additional fame for being a place ‘where death is prohibited’. The law is a protest by the mayor who has said that Lanjaron is to remain with this law until the government buys land for a new cemetery! You will also see Orgiva, the central town of this mountainous region, and picturesque villages such as Carataunas, Pampaneira, Pitres, Portugos which is known for its “Fuente Agria” or bitter spring water, and Trevelez, the highest village in Spain. You will then continue through Bubion to Capileira, where you will enjoy a traditional three-course lunch. At the end of this delightful day-long tour you will be dropped off back at your hotel in Granada.
