Leave Granada for the day to travel into the beautiful and remote mountain region of Alpujarras. In the wettest parts, where rivers run down from the Sierra Nevada, you can see orchards full of fruit trees especially grape vines, oranges, lemons, persimmons, figs and almonds. The area also boasts an incredible variety of wild flowers.

The town also has a ruined castle and has earned additional fame for being a place ‘where death is prohibited’. The law is a protest by the mayor who has said that Lanjaron is to remain with this law until the government buys land for a new cemetery!
You will also see Orgiva, the central town of this mountainous region, and picturesque villages such as Carataunas, Pampaneira, Pitres, Portugos which is known for its “Fuente Agria” or bitter spring water, and Trevelez, the highest village in Spain.
