This delightful tour, which runs only in the summer months, will take you to some of Germany’s loveliest destinations – the romantic city of Heidelberg and the Middle Rhine Valley. You will spend approximately 5 ½ hours in Heidelberg and 5 ¼ hours on the Rhine tour.
The day starts with a visit to the town of Heidelberg, which lies on the River Neckar some 80 km (48 miles) south of Frankfurt.
You’ll visit Heidelberg’s star attraction – the magnificent Schloss (Castle). Perched 300 feet above the town, the Castle is a mix of styles from Gothic to Renaissance and consists of several buildings around an inner courtyard.
You’ll also see the amazing Heidelberg Tun – the world’s largest wine barrel – constructed in 1751 by Prince Elector Karl Theodor. It stands 7 meters high, is 8 ½ meters wide, holds 220,000 liters (58,124 gallons) of wine.
Your guide will lead you around the medieval town center to view more examples of Gothic and Renaissance architecture such as the old Bridge, Church of the Holy Spirit, the Karl’s Gate, House of the Knights and Heidelberg University.
A lunch box (sandwich and drink) is included in your tour price and you can enjoy this at a suitable point during the excursion.
In the afternoon the coach will take you to the most beautiful part of the great Rhine Valley – the Middle Rhine. This area has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its natural beauty and historic importance.
In its middle section, the Rhine runs through a spectacular gorge. Rich agriculture and a booming water-borne trade made the area wealthy and great castles were built on crags to protect the trade route.
The glorious landscape has been celebrated by many poets and artists. It inspired Heinrich Heine to write his poem “Lorelei”, and Wagner used this stretch of the river as the setting for his opera “Götterdämmerung”.
Enjoy a scenic boat trip on a Rhine steamer and a wine-tasting session before relaxing over dinner in a beautiful waterside restaurant. The set meal is German roast chicken with French fries and a mixed salad. A vegetarian option is available. Your guide will ask the group prior to arrival at the restaurant if they wish to have the regular dinner or the vegetarian dinner.
