Railway station/your hotel in Ajmer
Both Ajmer and Pushkar have a charm of their own. A walk down one of the lively streets of Ajmer where old-world horse drawn tongas (which seat passengers) jostle for space with modern cars and bikes and hawkers shout to sell their ware is an experience in itself. In the middle of this noisy street lies the famous dargah which was built by the Mughal ruler Humayun.
Pushkar is home to one of the very few temples dedicated to Brahma, one of the Holy Trinity of Hinduism, making it an important pilgrimage site for Hindus. Pilgrims visit it to take a dip in the lake which is said to be able to absolve you of your sins and lead you to salvation. Apart from that, Pushkar has an interesting terrain of rocks, sand, hills and vegetation. Camel safaris and fairs make it an attractive destination for an eclectic mix of people. Don’t miss this tour.
Travel from Delhi on board the air-conditioned train, the Shatabdi Express (train ticket included. Tentative train timings: 0610h/1300h (06:10 am/01:00 pm), to arrive at Ajmer.
You will be picked up from the railway station and taken on a sightseeing tour accompanied by a local English-speaking guide. Travel in an air-conditioned vehicle and visit the dargah (shrine) - the tomb of the Sufi saint Hazrat Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti. The shrine is built of splendid white marble and its entrance is through a gigantic gate built by the Nizam of Hyderabad. There are two massive cauldrons in the courtyard and on the right side of the courtyard is the Akbari Masjid built in white marble. The saint’s tomb with a splendid marble dome is in the centre of the second courtyard, which is surrounded by a silver platform.
Journey on to Pushkar where you will spend the night at the Pushkar Palace Hotel. The hotel has air-conditioned rooms, each with period furniture and frescoes creating a great ambience. From most of the rooms, you can see the lake. The multi-cuisine restaurant offers Coninental, Chinese and Indian food and you could enjoy a meal in the garden too apart from the restaurant. Your package includes breakfast daily throughout your stay.
Spend the night in the hotel.
After breakfast, go on a sightseeing tour accompanied by a local English-speaking guide. Visit the famous Brahma Temple – one of the very few temples in the world dedicated to Brahma. Marble steps lead up to the temple where a silver turtle lies embossed on the floor facing the sanctorum. The marble floor around the turtle and the walls are embedded with hundreds of silver coins. Images of the peacock, the vehicle of Brahma’s consort Saraswati, adorn the temple walls. A hans (goose, considered special by Brahma) spans the gateway to the temple which is crowned with a red spire.
Visit the famous Pushkar Lake, surrounded by more than 400 temples and over 50 bathing ghats (steps with broad platforms leading into the lake). Legend has it that Lord Brahma performed a yagna (sacrifice) here and that a lotus fell from his hands into the valley of Pushkar. The Pushkar Lake is said to have miraculously appeared at that spot. A dip in the lake (especially on the day of Kartika poornima, full moon day in the month of Kartika according to the Hindu calendar ) is said to wash away all the sins and lead to salvation. Around that time (October/November), a very colourful cattle and camel fair is held at Pushkar. People from villages come to buy and sell animals and many competitions are held between villagers making it a very interesting fair.
Later visit the local markets where you can pick up tinkling bangles, beads, embroidered clothes and shoes, a range of leather goods and colourful wooden toys.
Spend the night at the hotel.
