Overview

Museum enthusiasts will love this tour of Egmore’s Government Museum which is home to some of the most ancient relics and historical armory. Wander through the museum and behold its collection of bronze sculptures of the Chola period, Amaravati sculptures, Tanjore armoury, inscriptions on stones and copper plates, artifacts from the Megaliths of Adichanallur, the Bruce Foote Collection of prehistoric stone implements, the exquisite crystal reliquaries from the Bhattiprolu Stupa and the enormous skeleton of the whale obtained on shore near Mangalore.


The museum is definitely a misnomer because the 6-structure complex is home to 46 galleries and boasts of a brilliant collection of scientific and artistic artifacts. You will find an impressive collection of Pallava and Chola bronze sculptures (dating back to the 10th and 13th centuries)! Those with keen interest in Indian art are guaranteed to enjoy a visit to the Government museum.


Later proceed to Fort Museum located inside the St.George Fort which is decorated with cannons of Tipu Sultan. There are a lot of interesting artifacts showcased in the museum like coins, artifacts and so on
