There’s more to Miami than the beautiful beaches. This enchanting private tour shows you the glorious architecture bequeathed to the city by the boom years of the 1920s and 30s.
In this gilded era, Miami was marketed as a tropical paradise and millions of dollars were poured into extravagant construction projects. The lavish buildings are now preserved as the Art Deco district – the world’s greatest collection of art deco architecture.
Have your camera ready to photograph the picture perfect hotels and apartments painted in appealing candy colors and embellished with whimsical decorations. It was here that stars of the silver screen like Rita Hayworth and Clark Gable came to hang out and enjoy the delights of Miami.
Also explore Coral Gables, the exclusive district with stately homes modeled on traditional Spanish and Italian architecture – the Mediterranean Revival style.
Your private tour includes door to door service and Cuban-style lunch at a popular restaurant.
For your Miami Beach Tour you will be picked up at 10:00am from the front of your hotel by a minivan or SUV.
Your friendly driver/guide will take you on a delightful tour of the highlights of Miami Beach. Just some examples of the things you might see are given below:
The Art Deco District: The world’s largest collection of Art Deco architecture, comprising hundreds of hotels, apartments and other structures erected between 1923 and 1943. Inspired by the luxury liners of the past, some of the buildings are decorated with porthole windows, ship-like railings, sleek curves, glass blocks, and shiny chrome. Many are painted in an array of pastel shades. These whimsical palaces were hangouts for Hollywood stars like Carole Lombard, Rita Hayworth and Clark Gable.
Casa Casuarina: Also known as “Versace House”. This 1930s mansion was fashion designer Gianni Versace’s South Beach home and it was here that he was shot in July 1997.
Lincoln Road Mall: A seven-block shopping mecca combining the best of 1930s architecture with trendy shopping, eclectic antique stores, avant-garde art galleries and vibrant nightlife.
Holocaust Memorial: The centerpiece of this poignant Memorial is a 42-foot bronze arm reaching upwards. It is inscribed, as if tattooed, with a serial number like those applied to concentration camp prisoners. The names of Holocaust victims are inscribed on a black granite wall at the site.
Bass Art Museum: An important cultural destination with collections including everything from Renaissance to contemporary art.
Your tour also takes you to Coral Gables. This secluded neighborhood was developed in Mediterranean revival style by George Merrick in the 1920s. His aim was to create a planned suburb of Miami that featured Spanish architectural features to underscore the historic role of Spain in the Americas.
Perhaps the greatest example of the Mediterranean Revival style in existence today is the Biltmore Hotel, inspired by the Cathedral of Seville in Spain.
Your tour also includes a delicious lunch at Versailles' Restaurant, in the ‘Little Havana’ district. The menu features Cuban cuisine. Choose from Filet of Mahi Mahi or Grilled Palomilla Steak, with 2 side dishes of Tostones, black beans, french fries, and rice. One soft drink per person is also included.
