A visit to Cambodia is incomplete without an exhaustive tour of the magnificent Angkor Complex. Comprising of Angkor Thom or the Great City and the architectural masterpiece, Angkor Wat, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is the perfect place to soak in the vibrantly exciting history of the Khmers.
The tour starts with the visionary city, Angkor Thom, the last capital of the Khmer Empire under King Jayavarman VII. The splendour of this classical megalopolis can be barely contained in words. The five grandiose entry towers, having stood the test of time, are a sight to behold. The city is a vista of constructive wonders, right from the colossal Prasat Bayon to the breath taking Ta Phrom. Prasat Bayon stands right at the centre of Angkor city and often beats the grandeur of the Angkor Wat. With the engineering genius and artistic sublimity exuding from each corner, this monument is poetry in stone. Ta Phrom is no different, with the gigantic tree roots growing of the ancient ruins adding to the intoxicating awe of the place. It almost reminds you of being trapped in the Jumanji game but it will give you the real taste of Hollywood-style expeditions, thanks to it being one of the locales for the epic Tomb Raider film.
The second half of tour takes you through the architectonic wonder, the glorious Angkor Wat. Listed as one of the finalists for the New Seven Wonders of the World, it is the largest religious monument in the world - a sprawling 400 acres of a mind blowing fusion of Hindu-Buddhist influences. It was originally constructed as a dedication to Lord Vishnu but converted into a Buddhist monastery by the end of the 12th century; cultural harmony has probably never looked better. Feast your eyes on the majestic carvings of the temple walls, admire the brilliant creative exuberance of the complex, and sink in to the intoxicating historical charm of Angkor Wat as you ramble around the marvellous ruins.
The icing on the cake? The smashing panorama of Angkor Wat, the West Baray reservoir, the North Eastern highlands and vivacious paddy fields creating an overwhelmingly beautiful scene during sunset from the top of Phnom Bakeng hill. Trust us when we say, you don’t want to miss this view for anything in the world!
