Activity Overview
The word Kremlin in Russian actually means fortress or citadel and the Moscow fortress, the cradle of the city, is the main fortress in the country. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is an excellent reflection of different stages of Russian art and politics dating from the medieval imperial age up to the Soviet Union.
Rather than a single monument it is an enigmatic and rather eclectic selection of churches, palaces, squares, walls and towers offering an enormous array of decorative and applied arts. The best craftsmen and artists worked on its churches, cathedrals and palaces, leaving us priceless works. Impressive medieval walls and watch towers still encircle the area protecting the magnificent buildings within. Marvel at the superb churches and cathedrals with their gleaming gold domes. Be stunned by the immense beauty of the Great Kremlin Palace or the pretty Poteshny Palace. Admire the classical Senate building then head off to visit the intriguing Armoury.
The Armoury is Russia’s oldest and most important museum. It is supposed to have been built in 1485, though the first record of it was in 1547. Wander around the nine halls and gain an intriguing insight into the past of this fantastic country. View clothing from different ages, weaponry, carriages and other curious artefacts before admiring the world famous Faberge Eggs, as well as the most important item of the museum, the so-called Crown of Monomachos: the Imperial crown of Russia.
