Overview

Experience the charms of Villimale on this delightful Eco tour that also treats you to an understanding of the local environment conservation work as well as a traditional Hedhikaa experience - the ideal escape from the ever busy capital city with wide, open streets, an abundance of greenery so unlike Malé, two local beaches and peaceful almost tranquil atmosphere.

Dive into the quieter side of city life as we take the public ferry to Villimale, savoring the infectious energy of the ferry terminal and observing the citizens going about their daily lives. Having formerly been a resort as well as a prison, Villimale was ‘developed’ to accommodate the ever growing population of Malé. Stepping off the ferry in Villimale, one can easily visualize how the city islands would have been prior to urban modernization.

The 60-minute walking tour is the perfect opportunity to gain an insider’s perspective into the local way of ‘city’ life , while learning how the local community together with the NGO ‘Save the Beach’ have been working to protect both their island and ocean environment. Your guide will regale you with some incredible knowledge on the Maldivian ecosystems and conservation challenges arising from coastal development while you observe the before and after of reclamation works and harbor development. We will also help you identify the native trees and learn the Dhivehi names for species that may be common to you back home.

Once we are done with our Eco tour, we will head to a local cafe on the beach for a traditional hedhikaa experience - evening tea paired with local savour snacks - indulging your taste buds with true Maldivian flavors. This is also a perfect chance to chat up with your guide and the conservation workers about conservation, waste management, coral planting and more - all while relaxing amidst a spectacular sunset!
