  • Overview & Itinerary

Tiwanaku, also called Tiahuanaco, is Bolivia's premiere archaeological site. Easily reached from La Paz, the ruins are the remains of a pre-Inca civilization dating from about 600 BC. It was a major sacred ceremonial centre and the focal point of a culture that was far-reaching in its influence and believed to be more advanced than the Incas in art, pottery, astronomy and mathematics.

The greatest architectural achievement of pre-Incan civilization, Tiwanaku is a mystery with virtually nothing known of this ‘lost’ civilization. Stroll around the ruins and visit the famous ‘Puerta del Sol’ or Gateway of the Sun, carved from a single block of stone. See distinctive stone heads on the walls, mysterious stone carvings, stone maps, calendars, high statues, monoliths, open air and semi-underground temples. Some stones weigh up to 150 tons!

History and archaeology buffs will treasure this tour to a bygone era.

(This tour is available in two options – coach and private. The private option offers you greater flexibility to do the tour at your own pace.)

You will be picked up from your hotel and taken for an archaeological sightseeing tour to the Tiwanaku pre-Columbian ruins. An English-speaking guide will accompany you on this tour.

Located on the north-eastern shores of Lake Titicaca, the Tiwanaku ruins are the most important archaeological site of Bolivia. Tiwanaku was the centre of a civilization that dominated the region for more than 3000 years.

On reaching the ruins, you will be shown around the Temple of Kalasaya, Akapana (ancient stone pyramid), the underground temples, and Puma Punku. Puma Punku is another 'temple area' with many finely cut stones some weighing over 100 tonnes. It is believed that it was a giant wharf.

There will also be a visit to the Anthropology Museum that houses impressive artifacts unearthed from the excavations.

Among the impressive stone works at the ruins are structures such as the Gate of the Sun, a portal carved from a single block of stone weighing 15 tons.

After touring the ruins return to La Paz and get dropped off at your hotel. There is also an option of a transfer to Lake Titicaca.

This tour ends either in La Paz or Lake Titicaca.
