Germans are not just about engineering and scientific expertise; the country’s cuisine is quite a dreamy affair. This Food Tour in Frankfurt will take you from the lively, modern centre of the bank towers via the lovingly reconstructed old town to the trendy district south of the river Main where you’ll enjoy selected regional delicacies along with traditional pubs, family-run shops, hip hotspots and extraordinary places, accompanied by entertaining anecdotes about the Hessian "Mainhattan"!
Our tour commences right in the heart of Frankfurt in a historic location dating back to an era when news didn’t yet travel in bits and bytes but rather in real time, kicking it off with a fashionable sparkling beverage à la Frankfurt in the picturesque inner courtyard. Unknown to many, this former home to riding stables and the imperial post offices is presently the home of creative gastronomy in a stately atmosphere. Diving into the posh part of the city, we will visit the famous “mother”, also a local institution, where you can join the devotees of good taste and delight yourself with the finest soul food. Quite the retro experience, the cosy restaurant which is nestled on the city’s most elegant shopping street will take you right back to the incredible 60s.
Stepping away from the conventional, we will visit a modern alchemist, Jen, who is keen to make a statement against mass production and create a society that appreciates good food. Having dedicated his life to the city’s “liquid gold”, the cabinets at his store showcase fine, handmade droplets of Apfelwein and once you’ve had a taste of one of his Hessian ciders, we guarantee your impression of the drink will change for good! The gastronomic journey also treats you to Goethe’s favourite meal in a traditional, award-winning family establishment close to a hidden cloister yard, discovering the cradle of Frankfurt food culture – along with its fish tank in the cellar, feasting on a hearty main course at the house of the first “cider queen”, drinking a toast clinking an item of fruit at a former "marriage market" - something that has been enjoyed by former German chancellors or stars like Nicolas Cage and Lionel Richie; enjoying a Frankfurt speciality already famous for 175 years and lovingly crafted by family masters in the fourth generation; crossing the river Main from above and below, and much, much more. This is a Germany you’d surely not thought of experiencing!
