  • Overview & Itinerary

Discover Chiang Rai’s inimitable heritage on this memorable full day tour. With visits to Chiang Saen, the famous Golden Triangle, Mae Sae and the homes of Akha as well as Yao hill tribes, this is a tour is an excellent way to get a taste of the city’s rich history,.

Our first stop for the day is the historical city of Chiang Saen, formerly known as Wiang Hiran Nakhon Ngoen Yang and the capital of the Lanna Kingdom before being replaced by chiang Rai in 1262. Having been a royal capital, one can still remnants of its glorious past in the fascinating ruins of the double city walls, the array of antiques that have been recovered and of course, the very distinctive Lanna style of Buddhist sculptures and temple architecture that is unmistakably visible in the region.

Chiang Rai is nicknamed the ‘Gateway to Golden Triangle’ and our next stop is proof of that. We will head to the exact spot where the three countries of Thailand, Lao and Myanmar meet - locally known as Sop Ruak, thanks to a natural boundary formed by the mighty Mekong River. The Golden Triangle is infamous for being one of most notorious areas for opium trafficking but the entire area is one ravishing panorama. It’s a humbling experience, to say the least, to witness how Mother Nature is always a step ahead of mankind and its politics.

Having savoured this much sought after experience, we will visit another unique place - Mae Sai, the northernmost point of Thailand, before we break for a quick lunch of local delicacies. Post lunch, we will head out to Doi Mae Salong where we will get up close and personal with Akha Hill tribe at Baan Samyak Village and the Yao Hill tribe at Baan Pong Pa Kham Village. Originating from Southern China, both the have unique characteristic and easily recognisable from their attires, cultures and lifestyle. While the Akha are known for spectacular headgears and bamboo houses on low stilts, the Yao wear some beautiful black coats with a distinct scarlet woollen lapels and matching black turbans. It’s a fantastic opportunity to behold Thailand’s rich and diverse ethnicity.
