  • Overview

A walk through history, a tryst with spirituality and an acquaintance with ethnicity - this tour will treat you to some of the gems in Chiang Rai including a host of historical spots, the Tapae Gate, Wat Phra That Doi Suthep and an encounter with the Meo people.

We kick start our morning tour with a panoramic drive through the Old City, one of the most historic areas in Chiang Mai, as you catch sight of quaint city walls, the exquisite city gates and the antique moat. The entire area is a heady brew of the past and present, and is a true reflection of the cultural vibrancy of the city. As we continue our drive, you will see a host of popular attractions, the local market, a host of foreign consulates and government building, and of course, the renowned Tapae Gate which was the eastern gate for the city and one of the five original ones.

Our first stop for the day is the momentous Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, built by King Gue-Na in 1383 and situated 3,500 feet above sea level. An opulent temple that is quite the sight to behold, it is believed to house a Buddhist relic - presumably the shoulder bone of Lord Buddha. Visiting the temple is quite the journey as one has to hike up more than 300 steps; but once you reach the top, the stunning Lanna-style temple and the spectacular view of the city more than makes up for it and will, in fact, leave you quite breathless!

Having soaked up this magnificent sight, we will head to our final stop for the day - the village of Doi Pui, home to the Meo Hill Tribe. Also known as the Hmong, they are believed to be originally from the Yellow River or Huang He region in China, and are involved in both the Doi Inthanon Royal Project as well as with the Huay Luek Development Centre - both of which promote contemporary agriculture to help ethnic communities economically. Thailand is home to stellar ethnic diversity and this is a perfect opportunity to interact with this intriguing community.
