Our tips for Big Island

Be prepared to face all kinds of weather on the island of Hawaii. Since you’ll be experiencing everything from hot sunny days to cold and rainy ones, make sure that you pack light summer gear to layers and raincoats. The public transport system isn’t the best. So the best way to explore is by a rented car. As a foreigner, you will need an international driver’s license to rent a car. Lots of hotels and resorts also offer rented cars. Leave your furry friends at home. Travelling with a dog to Big Island can be a major inconvenience as animals are usually subject to a quarantine period of a month when they arrive.

Good to know

Even though the diverse weather of the island makes it a year-round tourist destination, the best time to visit would be in the months of September and November when hotel rates are low. The best weather in Hawaii is in April, May, September, and October. Winter is ideal for surfing and whale watching while the summer months are great for hiking. June through November is the hurricane season and November to March see significant rains.
