Overview

Learn about Jordan’s fascinating history and architectural marvels with a tour of the Ajloun Castle in northern Jordan. This 12th century castle stands out as a fine example of medieval Arab-Islamic military architecture. It was built in 1184 A.D. by the Muslim Sultan Saladdin in order to resist the Crusaders from invading and to protect the trade and commercial routes between Jordan and Syria.

The castle is well-preserved and offers a commanding view of Ajloun town from its position atop a hill.

Itinerary

  • You will be picked up from your hotel in a private air-conditioned car/mini van and taken on a sightseeing tour of the Ajloun Castle. Travel about 73 kilometres north of Amman through a beautiful pine-forest and olive groves, arriving at the town of Ajloun. Along the way your English-speaking driver will provide background information about the castle. Arrive at Ajloun Castle. If you wish, you may hire a local guide (cost not included) who will show you around this historical monument. The Ajloun Castle stands atop a hill in this ancient town and affords scenic views of the scenery all around. Built in 12th century by the Muslim Sultan Saladdin, the castle is a fine example of medieval Arab and Islamic military architecture. It was built more like a rectangular fort with four square towers, dominating a wide stretch of the north Jordan Valley and passages to it. From its hilltop position, the Castle of Ajloun protected the communication routes between South Jordan and Syria. It was one of a chain of forts which lit beacons at night to pass signals from the Euphrates as far as Cairo. The castle is beautifully preserved and is a popular attraction with its structures, towers, chambers, galleries and staircases. At the end of the tour, you will be dropped back at your hotel in Amman.
