Key Highlights

  • Amman is home to some of the grandest mosques in the Middle East
  • See the famous Dead Sea scrolls at the Archaeological Museum

Overview

With an enchanting mix of ancient and modern, Amman has perhaps very few parallels in the world. This ancient capital city, called Philadelphia in Roman times, is rich in historical archaeological sites, art galleries and shops.

On this city tour, visit the Bronze Age Citadel and admire the impressive Roman-era amphitheatre and temples. The Archaeological Museum here houses the famous Dead Sea Scrolls, a copy of the oldest Hebrew text and four rare Iron Age sarcophagi. Explore the Umayyad Palace at the Citadel, which dates back to 720 AD. Pay a visit to the Ottoman-style King Abdullah I Mosque, a grand monument of the modern times.

The city also has colourful souks and shopping malls, selling everything from tiny souvenirs to expensive designer wear.

Entrance fees to all sites are included and you have the choice to explore the sites independently or enlist the services and knowledge of a local guide.

Itinerary

You will be picked up from your hotel in a private air-conditioned deluxe car/mini van and taken on a city sightseeing tour of Amman.

On this tour you will:

• Admire the ruins of ancient Amman at the Citadel (Jebel al-Qala) which dates back to the Bronze Age. It was occupied by Romans, Byzantines and Umayyads for thousands of years. Visit the Roman amphitheatre, which is an impressive remnant of Philadelphia, as the city was known during the 2nd century A.D.

• View the impressive Umayyad Palace that dates back to 720 A.D.

• Explore the interesting artefacts on display at the Archaeological Museum, which houses the famous Dead Sea Scrolls and 6500-year-old statues.

• Visit the massive King Abdullah I Mosque, which has an unmistakable blue dome and an octagonal prayer hall without pillars. The mosque is open to non-Muslims.

Later, explore the contrasting Old and New Amman. Like Rome, the city is built on seven hills and showcases an enchanting mixture of cultures and traditions as they evolved over the centuries. Gleaming white houses, kebab stalls and cafés are interspersed with bustling markets — known in Arabic as souks — and the glorious remnants of ancient and medieval civilizations.

At the end of the tour, you will be dropped back at your hotel in Amman.
