The archaeological site of Olympia came to light after excavations were carried out here by the German archaeologist Ernst Curtius. Wander around the Olympic Village, including the running track and original Olympic Stadium where races were run and victories won thousands of years ago.
Olympia is also home to the sacred temple of Zeus of 470 B.C., where once stood a seventh wonder of the ancient world. The Temple of Zeus at Olympia is one of the earliest examples of fully developed temple design in Greece, and is considered a model of Doric temple architecture.
The tour begins from Mediterranean Laganas. Accompanied by a professional English-speaking guide, set out in an air-conditioned vehicle to the pier. Board your cruise vessel and head for mainland Greece for you sightseeing tour of Olympia.
The journey from Zakynthos to mainland Greece takes about 1 hour 15 minutes.
On arrival at Olympia, explore the archaeological ruins of the Olympic Village, including the running track and original Olympic Stadium, where the historic Olympic Flame started its journey for the Athens 2004 Olympic Games.
View the remains of the sacred Temple of Zeus, where once stood a seventh wonder of the ancient world.
Head for the new Archaeological Museum that houses some of the most magnificent and famous examples of ancient Greek sculpture in the world today. See prehistoric terracotta exhibits, a fascinating bronze collections and amazing sculptures dating from the Archaic to the Roman periods.
You will also have free time in Olympia new town before heading back to Zakynthos.
The tour returns to the starting point.
