Overview

Join in this fantastic guided tour of some of St Petersburg’s main landmarks before embarking on a dazzling visit to the fairytale Cathedral of the Saviour on Spilled Blood.

Soak up the atmosphere of this lively imperial city and view some of its most famous landmarks as we travel around. As we arrive at our main destination, the Cathedral of the Saviour on Spilled Blood, its colourful medieval style facade contrasts sharply with the other neoclassical monuments typical of the city. Looking like a fairytale gingerbread house with sugar icing domes, this magnificent building stands picturesquely alongside the Griboedov Canal. It was originally built by Tsar Alexander III in memory of his father, Alexander II who was killed on this spot in a terrorist attack in 1881.

The construction of the church, with multiple domes, richly decorated facades and interior lasted over twenty years and involved the work of some of Russia’s finest artists of the time. As you cast your eyes over the facade, take in the incredibly intricate mosaics and decorative features. Then pass inside and be prepared to be bewitched by the sheer number of mosaics. In total there are said to be around 7,500 square metres of stunning mosaics depicting mainly biblical scenes. An elaborate shrine made from semi-precious stones is situated in the exact spot where the Tsar was attacked surrounded by the original cobblestone road where his body lay. Although funded mainly by the Imperial family and other private benefactors it comes as no surprise to learn that the construction went well over budget.
