  • Overview & Itinerary
Overview Lemanak is a tributary of the main Batang Lupar river. Many traditional longhouses can be found situated along the river. The Lemanak river is another exciting destination within easy reach from Kuching. About 220 kilometres away from Kuching, Lemanak can be reached in about five hours by road. The journey to the Iban or Sea Dayak longhouse passes through cool, thick, overhanging jungle foliage.

The natives here continue to follow primitive modes of subsistence like basket or mat weaving, mending of fishing nets, feeding of livestock and fishing. Try "tuak" (a potent local rice wine) and witness the traditional "Ngajat" or War Dance. The beauty of this place and the warm hospitality of the locals are sure to be a highlight of your Malaysian visit.

    Day 1:

A 225 km air-conditioned vehicle journey takes you through lush green countryside dotted with paddy fields, pepper gardens and rubber plantations, and flanked by rugged jungle-clad mountains. Along the way, stop at the Serian farmer’s market, visit a pepper garden and view carnivorous pitcher plants. Stop for lunch at a roadside bazaar deep in Iban country.

Arrive at Lemanak jetty mid-afternoon for a longboat ride up the Lemanak River, passing through typical Borneo countryside with an ancient longhouse tucked behind almost every bend in the river.

Arrive at Ngemah Longhouse and visit the “entire village under one roof.” Dinner, featuring delicious fresh jungle produce, is served in the simple guest-house.

After dinner, return to the longhouse for an evening’s entertainment, including traditional dancing, music, games and a glass or two of tuak (rice wine) with the longhouse chief. The Iban are a fun-loving people, and visitors are expected to join in!

Overnight in the Longhouse. You will be spending your night at the ruai (the longhouse common room). As for the washroom facilities you will be sharing with the Ibans.

    Day 2:

After breakfast, enjoy a blowpipe demonstration and try shooting one yourself. Then take a short walk through the forest accompanied by Iban trackers, and learn about the traditional uses of rainforest plants in Iban culture.

Return to the resthouse for a short rest and to freshen up before you proceed by boat up the river for a boating trip to visit another Iban village. A traditional Iban lunch will be served by the riverbank if weather permits. This will give you a chance to taste food cooked by using bamboo.

Return back to Longhouse for accommodation and dinner. (Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner)

    Day 3:

After breakfast, return to Kuching via the same route with stopover at a roadside town for lunch before reaching the city. Drop off at your hotel in Kuching. (Breakfast and Lunch )
