Sapa, also called “Tonkinese Alps”, is at an elevation of 1,650 metres. The hill station retreat is known for its misty panoramic scenery, lush flora, rice terraces and tribal inhabitants. The H’Mong and the Dzao are the biggest ethnic groups of the area. The Saturday markets of Sapa, where the tribal villagers come to sell their handicrafts, household products, animals, to drink rice and corn wine with friends and relatives are a big hit with tourists. The mountainous terrain, especially the 3,143-metre Fansipan peak, draws trekking and hiking enthusiasts to the region.
