  • Overview & Itinerary
Overview One of the must-do things while you are in Rotorua is to visit a Hangi or a Maori Concert. One of the best places to showcase this ancient Maori tradition is the award-winning Tamaki Maori Village. Journey back in time to a pre-European lifestyle of customs and traditions. Enjoy the night’s festivities as you are treated to a banquet of succulent foods cooked the traditional Maori way in a hangi (earth oven). Get fascinated by the Maori village as it comes alive to the sound and activities of tribal songs, dances, myths and legends.

You will be picked up from your hotel and taken to the Tamaki Heritage Experiences Office on 1220 Hinemaru Street. From here you will travel in a coach to the Tamaki Maori Village, for an evening of entertainment and cultural discovery.

En route to this pre-European village set deep within the forest, your guide will instruct you on the rules and protocol for visiting the marae (village).

Arrive at the Tamaki Maori Village.

Participate in the traditional Maori welcome. A chief is selected, a song learnt and the eerie cry of the welcome is heard before entering into a world of ancient Maori and proud warriors.

Set out on a guided tour of the Maori village.

Watch a cultural programme of traditional Maori haka, songs and dances.

Later, enjoy a traditional Hangi (earth oven) buffet dinner in the food house (Wharekai). The food is cooked slowly beneath the ground in earthen ovens.

At the end of the tour, you will be dropped back at your hotel in Rotorua.
