Tour this iconic stretch of the American frontier, where the ghosts of the Old West still linger and the country’s first Presidents are immortalized in stone.
A scenic drive in Custer National Park reveals bison, white-tailed deer, and bighorn sheep grazing together on a lush and limitless sweep.
Stand below the massively impressive Mount Rushmore, where the heads of four of America’s most important leaders are carved with striking precision from the face of a Granite mountain.
Proceed to the Crazy Horse Memorial, another breathtaking stone monument created to honor the legacy of the first Americans.
An air-conditioned coach will pick up from your hotel in Rapid City or Keystone to kick off this Black Hills Tour. You will be treated to a recorded narration during the tour that will shed light on the many sights along the way.
See the incomparable Mount Rushmore, where 60-foot tall renderings of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln stare out stoically from an immense granite mountain. This shrine to democracy is among America’s most recognizable landmarks, and its unmistakable message of Manifest Destiny still resonates across the plains of the Old West.
Continue down Iron Mountain Road, famous for its pig-tail bridges and tunnels that frame Mount Rushmore in the distance.
Enjoy a scenic drive in Custer State Park, a wildlife preserve where prairie dogs squint in the sunlight and hungry mountain lions faithfully track the movements of deer and antelope.
Re-energized, you set out for the Crazy Horse Memorial, another masterpiece of stone, depicting the great Lakota warrior riding a horse and pointing powerfully into the distance. It is the culmination of a 50-year effort begun in 1948 by sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski, who worked for a time on Mount Rushmore. Ziolkowski was commissioned by Chief Henry Standing Bear, who wanted a Native American luminary to be granted his rightful place in the pantheon of American heroes.
You will be returned to your hotel in Rapid City or Keytone at tour’s end.
