  • Overview & Itinerary

An enthralling tryst with the royal, ethnic and economic history of Thailand, this journey around Chiang Rai will be a feast for your soul. Trailing the Doi Tung range, an array of hill tribes and the town of Mae Sai, this is your to get to know Thailand’s vibrant heritage.

Our first destination for the day is the Thai Highlands of Doi Tung, home to a remarkable environmental and socio-economic development project which was initiated by the late Her Royal Highness, Princess Srinagarindra, the Princess Mother. She is well-known for being instrumental in the incredible reforestation work in the area, bringing an end to the opium trade in the region as well as that in helping the poppy farmers rehabilitate themselves with farming of other crops. A torchbearer of both ecological and economic change in the province, she is fondly remembered by the various hill tribes, whose lives she literally changed for the better, as Mae Fah Luang or ‘The Heavenly royal Mother’.

Our trip to Doi Tung includes a fascinating visit to the Doi Tung Royal Villa, the Princess Mother’s summer home, originally built to accommodate her during her work in the region and currently a museum displaying her inspiring work. We will also visit the beautiful and highly venerated Wat Phra That Doi Tung, a sight to behold with its two Lanna-style stupas - believed to house Lord Buddha’s left collarbone. Our route also crosses a host of indigenous hill tribes in the region with a chance to stop, interact with them, indulge in photo opportunities and get a riveting taste of their history as well as present lives. Thailand is known to be home to some of the most renowned hill tribes in the world and this is an excellent opportunity to get up close and personal with the country’s anthropological lineage.
We will break for a quick but absolutely delectable lunch of traditional delicacies at a local restaurant before our final interesting stop for the day, the town of Mae Sai which is the ‘northernmost point in Thailand’. Lying on the Thai-Burmese border, it’s a small trading town and it’s bazaar is popular for selling a tonne of goods imported from southern Chinese provinces, Myanmar and Laos - perfect to end your day with some unforgettable souvenirs from the region before heading back to your hotel!
