Overview

Visit two iconic destinations in Baku which make the city famous all over the world - The Baku Ateshgah Fire Temple and the Burning Mountain Yanar Dag. Behold these unique natural marvels what give the area the moniker of “Land Of Fire”

Head first to Ateshgah, the famous Fire Temple of Baku situated on the Abseron Peninsula. The Fire Temple of Baku was a place of sacrifice founded above a natural gas vent! You can see flames above the pillars and the centre of this temple structure which was built during the 17th and 18th centuries. Both Zoroastrian and Hindu architectural elements are incorporated in the structure. Ateshgah was nominated for List of World Heritage Sites, UNESCO in 1998 and by 2007 it was declared a state historical-architectural reserve by decree of the President of Azerbaijan.

Continue onward to see Yanar Dag: the Burning Mountain. Azerbaijan gets the moniker 'Land of Fire' from Marco Polo's visit to Baku during the 13th century where he mentioned numerous mysterious flames that could be found all over the Abseron Peninsula. At Yanar Dag, a 10m long wall of fire, that never extinguishes, burns continuously alongside the edge of the hill, and makes for the most spectacular at night! These natural flames of Azerbaijan can be attributed to its enormous gas reserves and they played a crucial part in the creation of Zoroastrianism — a mystical faith, centered around ceremonial fire cults.

The last leg of the tour brings you to Heydar Aliyev Cultural Center where you can learn more about Azerbaijan’s history and culture before enjoying a comfortable ride back to your hotel.
