Overview

Take the reins of Baku in your own hands as you embark on this self guided adventure around the city and explore places at your own pace! You call the shots on this tour and spend as much time as you want at each landmark site you visit. Start with the prehistoric petroglyphs at Gobustan National Park to see cave painting that date back to 40,000 years before continuing onward to learn about the mud volcanoes. These fun mud volcanoes are basically cold! The whole family of these ‘geologically flatulent’ little conical mounds often erupt thick, cold, grey mud that are considered to have healing properties!

Next you visit the Zoroastrian fire temple of Ateshgah and learn why Azerbaijan gets the moniker “Land of Fire”. The ever burning natural flame inside the temple and on top of its pillars dates back centuries and has been a prominent reason for the start of Zoroastrianism and fire worship in Azerbaijan. Continue onwards to explore the fire mountain of Yanar Dag, a 10m long wall of fire that never extinguishes, burns continuously alongside the edge of the hill, and makes for the most spectacular at night! These natural flames of Azerbaijan can be attributed to its enormous gas reserves.

The last leg of the tour brings you to Heydar Aliyev Cultural Center where you can learn more about Azerbaijan’s history and culture and admire the architecture of Baku's modern city center. Discover all that Baku and its surroundings have to offer on this full-day tour before enjoying a comfortable ride back to your hotel.

The way to Mud Volcanoes is off-road, so in heavy rainy weather conditions the tour transportation car cannot pass through heavy soil. In such case, we add to the tour program "Bibi Heybet" mosque - one of the oldest mosques in Baku.

In rainy weather conditions, we suggest additional shoes for Mud Volcanoes trip.
