Overview

Enter a surreal fairyland of fantastical rock formations when you visit the incredible Río Secreto

Río Secreto is one of Mexico’s greatest natural marvels. Come and experience this extraordinary underground river with thousands of spectacular stalactites and stalagmites in all kinds of weird and wonderful shapes.

Most other underground cave systems in Mexico are fully flooded and can only be explored by experienced cave divers. But Río Secretois only half-submerged so can be safely visited by adults and children over 4 years old.

Wearing a wetsuit, life jacket, special shoes and a safety helmet with headlamp you will walk and swim through the clear water in the underground grottoes.

It’s like entering another world! An experience you will never forget.

Itinerary

For your thrilling Río Secreto Adventure Tour you should make your way to Río Secreto, which is located approximately 5 km (3 m) southwest of Playa del Carmen. The caves are easily accessible via Cancun-Tulum Highway 307 km 283.5.

There are four tours per day at Río Secreto: at 9:00am, 11:00am, 1:00pm, and 3:00pm respectively, so you should book the one that suits you best. You meet your guide at the entrance to the Río Secreto Park. Tours of the caverns are conducted for groups of eight to 10 people.

It is recommended that you arrive wearing a swimsuit under your clothes. Before the tour, you will strip down to your swimsuit, take a quick shower (towel provided) and put on a wetsuit, life-jacket, water shoes and safety helmet with lamp. Lockers are provided so that you can put your things away safely while you are exploring the caves. Guests will be asked to remove any items of jewelry so it is advisable to leave these at your hotel before you start out for the trip.

Cameras are also not allowed but a photographer will accompany you into the caves and photos will be available for purchase afterwards.

After some brief instructions, your guide will lead you down a trail to the cave and you will walk and swim along a 600 meter (0.3 mile) route through many rooms and past many beautiful stalactites and stalagmites. In some of the areas the water is only knee deep, but in other places your feet won't touch the bottom.

There are no light fittings in the caves so the only light you will have is that from the headlamps worn by your party. This adds to the magical atmosphere.

At the end of the tour you can shower and change into dry clothes using the facilities provided. Light refreshments are included in the price of your trip.

The trip through the caves takes approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes and your tour ends back at the entrance to Río Secreto.
