The Dubai Heritage Tour gives you a tantalizing look at the traditions and culture of an ever-expanding city in the heart of the Middle East.
The adventure begins when you are picked up in the morning at your hotel in Dubai by an air-conditioned coach.
You’ll visit the old center of Dubai which evokes the city’s origins as a trading center. For centuries the city has traded gold, pearls, spices, fish, and other goods with neighboring countries in the Arabian Peninsula and with South East Asian countries. Follow your guide on a breathtaking historical excursion on foot that takes you across the Gold Souk with its charming market atmosphere to the Heritage House that symbolizes a traditional way of living.
You’ll next visit the first operational school in Dubai. Al Ahmadiyad School is a historical institution showing the beginning of the city’s educational ambitions and efforts.
At the Grand Souk Deira, you’ll find merchants and buyers haggling over countless commodities, including every kind of spice imaginable.
Continue your journey by crossing Dubai Creek in an abra, a local water taxi, to see the area and the palace of Shindaga, a neighborhood in the traditional center of Dubai. From 1912 to 1958, the then ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Saeed Al Maktoum, lived in the area and his residence in Al Shindagha is now open to the public as a museum.
Next take a brief walk along the Creek, passing the magnificent Grand Mosque in the Bastakiya quarter of Dubai. Established at the end of the 19th century by textile and pearl trading immigrants from Bastak in Iran, this neighborhood is known for its winding streets and restored merchants’ houses. We’ll also see the Grand Souk Bur Dubai, a wonderfully atmospheric market.
The last stop on our tour is a visit to the Sheikh Mohammed Center for Cultural Understanding. You will be welcomed by Emiratis for an informal chat at this non-profit organization that was established in 1998 to increase awareness and understanding between the various cultures that live in Dubai.
