Overview

Discover Pompeii and the still-active volcano that brought the bustling Roman city to its terrible end on this exclusive day trip from Rome. In a tour with an expert guide, you’ll see the most fascinating sights of the city, from plaster death casts to Pompeii’s fast food joints, stairs, beds and streets cut out by carriage wheels 2,000 years ago.

You will travel in a comfortable air-conditioned coach with an expert English-speaking The journey to Pompeii takes about 2 hours and 30 minutes. On arrival at Pompeii you will be taken on a 90-minute tour of one of the world’s most fascinating historic sites – a city literally frozen in time. Pompeii was once a prosperous commercial town and the center of an important wine-producing district. But on 24 August AD 79 Mount Vesuvius erupted burying the entire town under a thick carpet of volcanic ash.

During your time in Pompeii group sizes will be limited to 24 people or less with headsets for every visitor, so your guide will be easy to hear and interact with. You will also have the chance to climb to the edge of the crater of Mt. Vesuvius*. You can peer into the crater, which still fumes slightly. Vesuvius is considered one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world because of the 3,000,000 people who live around its base.

From the crater rim you will enjoy stunning views of the bay of Naples, Naples, Capri, Ischia, the edge of the Amalfi coast and more. At the end of the tour you will be dropped back at the starting point.

*During the winter season and on days when Mt. Vesuvius is closed due to weather conditions, your tour of the past will take you around the beautiful city of Naples instead.
