Overview

Get up, close with Hakka culture and lifestyle on this tour from Taipei. You will set off from Neiwan Branch Railway line to Zhudong where Taiwan’s biggest traditional Hakka market is located. Throughout the tour, you will get insights into the history and legends revolving around the Hakka culture. You will also learn to make traditional tea and fruit picking just like the locals do.

So, here’s the plan:

Start from: Hexing Railway Station

After the hotel pick up, you will be taken to this station made famous by a love story and is lovingly called the ‘Love Station’ by locals.

Arrive at: Neiwan Branch Railway Line

You will take a train from Hexing and deboard at this station which was the first railway constructed by the Taiwanese after the retrocession of Taiwan.

Stop at: Zhudong Traditional Market

It is the largest Hakka market in Taiwan and has been in existence for over 6 decades. Stroll the markets and take in the sights and sounds. The market is also famous for its street food.

Stop at: Beipu Old Street

This is the Hakka township in the west of Hsinchu County. When you tour the area, you will find buildings dating back to Qing dynasty and the Japanese colonial era. You will see the Beipu Citian Temple at the centre of the township. One of the main features is the Jin Guang Fu House that not only functions as an office but also symbolizes the cooperation between migrants from Guangdong and Fujian.

Learn: Lei Tea-making

After all the sightseeing, it will be time to relax. And what better way than sipping the traditional Hakka tea, Lei which is prepared by grinding pumpkin seeds, peanuts, sesame seeds, tea leaves and other food ingredients softly blended with hot water. Get hands-on experience in preparing the tea – it is easy as well as soothing.

Last but not least: Seasonal fruit picking

Taiwan is known as the ‘Kingdom of Fruits’ and at the end of the tour, get some fresh, seasonal fruits for home as a token of the hospitality of the Hakka people.
