This enchanting day tour takes you to Portugal’s “Dream Coast”, a feast for the eyes with its lush greenery, white beaches and azure seas.
After crossing Ponte Vasco da Gama, stop in Setúbal, one of the oldest cities in Portugal. See the Moorish castle by the river and the famous wildlife reserve. Look out for bright flocks of flamingos and for dolphins playing in the estuary.
Continue your journey through breath-taking scenery to Arrábida National Park, where you’ll see plant species found nowhere else in the world. At Portinho da Arrábida beach, enjoy the powdery sand, the clear blue sea and a swim if the weather is warm.
In the afternoon proceed to the village of Azeitão to taste two wines and tour a wine cellar. Your magical day ends with a visit to Palmela wine region and the Cristo Rei shrine.
To begin your delightful Arrábida, Sesimbra & Wine Tasting Day Tour from Lisbon tour, you will be met by your guide in Restauradores Square.
Traveling in a comfortable minivan you will cross the Ponte Vasco da Gama, one of the Europe’s longest bridges (approximately 10.5 miles). The first stop is Setúbal, one of Portugal’s oldest cities. Marvel at Setúbal Castle and its gorgeous views over the Sado River. The Natural Reserve and Estuary of Sado are home to a wealth of bird species, most notably flamingos, as well as a school of 33 dolphins. You’ll also see the Peninsula of Troia and the largest sand beach in Europe, over 43 miles (72 km) long.
A treat lies in store at the traditional Setúbal vegetable and seafood market. One of the best fish markets in the region, its building is decorated with beautiful tiles (azulejos) depicting traditional fishing activities and images of Setúbal. A perfect photo opportunity!
More glorious scenery awaits at Arrábida National Park. Aside from breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean, what makes Serra de Arrábida truly special is its vegetation. Many plant species that grow here can no longer be found in any other part of the world.
Continue to the beautiful Portinho da Arrábida beach. If you’re visiting during the summer, there will be time for a swim, so don´t forget to bring a towel and swim suit.
Enjoy a delicious lunch of fresh fish (payable direct) at the picturesque village of Sesimbra and relax on the beach. Then continue to Azeitão, where you’ll taste two wines while enjoying a guided tour of an old wine cellar with a long history.
Proceed through the Palmela wine region, passing vineyards, cork trees and windmills and stop at Palmela Castle for another magnificent photo opportunity.
Your next discovery is the Cristo Rei Sanctuary. Inaugurated in 1959, it is similar to the Cristo Rei in Corcovado, Brazil, although smaller in size. From here you have great views over Lisbon.
The tour ends at Restauradores Square and you will need to make your own arrangements for getting back to your accommodation.
Having never been to the Setubal Peninsula before we were amazed at the beauty of the area; the decline of heavy industry and fish canning has not left a scar on the landscape,... H MCKEACHAN
