You will be picked up in an air-conditioned vehicle from your hotel or accommodation in Funchal or Canico or Câmara de Lobos. Accompanied by an English-speaking nature guide, you will be taken on a long drive through the West side of Madeira Island. Along the way, make stops at some hot spots to watch landscapes, birds and plants. You will be provided with a guide book on plants, birds and butterflies.
First we start looking for the Trocaz Pigeon as it is an early waking up bird. For this we go to the North of the Madeira, to a valley surrounded by Laurel Forest and majestic mountains. It is also probable to observe Grey wagtails, Kestrels, Buzzards, Madeira Firecrests and maybe Chaffinches.
Next stop is at a higher place where centenary trees are the perfect habitat for Chaffinches, Robins and Firecrests though we always look for the difficult to spot Woodcocks, Red-legged partridges and Quails.
After observing such interesting species it is already time for lunch which is at sea level. The way towards the restaurant will allow us to see Yellow-legged gulls, Plain swifts, Berthelot's pipits and probably Linnets.
After a nice three course meal we can try some seawatching to spot Shearwaters or Petrels, different species depending on the season.
Again it follows a ride up to the mountain, through the Laurel Forest and then exotic forest and agriculture terrains to get to a wonderful sightseeing spot. This is also an important Bird Area where one can birdwatch Berthelot's pipits, Canaries, Rock sparrows, Spectacled warblers, Goldfinches and some migrant birds that like to stop here, such as Grey Heron, Golden Plovers, Starlings, Swallows, House Martins...
Last hotspot is at a freshwater pond next to the sea where we look for vagrant waders. Almost sure we will be welcomed by Waxbills, Moorhens, Ducks, Turnstones and Egrets.
After watching a variety of birds unique to Madeira, you will be dropped back to your hotel/accommodation.
