This ticket gives you direct admission to the popular attraction of Kelly Tarlton’s Antarctic Encounter and Underwater World and saves you having to waste time queuing. Kelly Tarlton’s is only 10 minutes' drive or six km (3.7 miles) from downtown Auckland and is located at 23 Tamaki Drive, Orakei. On arrival at the venue just present your booking confirmation voucher at the entrance.
Opened in 1985, the original Underwater World was the brainchild of Kelly Tarlton – an adventurer, diver, explorer and inventor.
At the facility, a moving walkway takes you through an acrylic tunnel past two giant tanks which together contain around 2000 marine creatures. The first tank (the predator tank) is filled mainly with sharks while the second has schooling fish such as blue mao mao.
Further exciting experiences await at Stingray Bay where you can meet the short-tailed stingrays, which can grow to 4m in length and weigh as much as 200lbs, and eagle rays, which are smaller.
There’s more amazing marine life at Fish Alley where you find tropical fish – such as piranha, lionfish and clown triggerfish – as well as fish from the seas around New Zealand, such as sea horse, octopus, and pigfish. At Seahorse Kingdom you can admire a wonderful collection of seahorses from around the world.
This section is home to New Zealand’s only sub-Antarctic penguins, giving you a rare chance to see these delightful birds up close. A snowcat ride brings you close to the 80-strong colony of King and Gentoo penguins to watch their playful antics on the snow and their elegant flight underwater.
A walk-through replica of Captain Robert Falcon Scott’s Antarctic hut (established back in 1911), complete with authentic memorabilia offers a glimpse of the realities of Antarctic exploration 100 years ago.
Your ticket gives you one day’s admission to Kelly Tarlton’s. The attraction is open daily from 0930h (09:30am) to 1730 (5:30pm). Last entry is 1630h (4:30pm).
