Doubtful Sound, located in the World Heritage Area of Fiordland, is an overwhelming place. Feel the awesome power of Nature here - the remoteness, the wilderness and the peace. Doubtful Sound is the second largest of the 14 fjords in Fiordland National Park and is three times longer and 10 times larger than Milford Sound. Towering peaks, several outstanding waterfalls and fiords clad with ancient vegetation create a powerful atmosphere of solitude and serenity.
Doubtful Sound is also home to Bottlenose dolphins, New Zealand fur seals and the Fiordland crested penguin.
Come to Doubtful Sound and experience the Sound of Silence!
You will be picked up from your hotel accommodation in Queenstown for the Doubtful Sound Wilderness Cruises and the tour starts from Real Journey's Visitor Centre, Pearl Harbour, Manapouri.
From Pearl Harbour at Manapouri, you will board a boat and cruise across picturesque Lake Manapouri to West Arm.
A short coach trip from here will lead to Deep Cove at the head of Doubtful Sound. The coach will travel over Wilmot Pass, through dense rainforest and colourful alpine moss gardens.
Arive at Doubtful Sound.
Board a spacious catamaran Patea Explorer for a 3-hour cruise of beautiful Doubtful Sound. Enjoy breathtaking views of waterfalls, rainforest and mountains. You might see fur seals basking on the rocks, or a resident pod of bottlenose dolphins.
Rare Fiordland crested penguins are sometimes encountered on a seasonal basis. Understanding of the area will be enhanced by the interesting on board English-only commentary. (Handouts are available in French, German and Spanish.)
On the return journey, the vessel's engines will be turned off and you will be treated to the 'Sound of Silence'.
After this, you also have the opportunity to visit the Manapouri Underground Power Station by coach.
Begin the return journey back to Manapouri.
At the end of the tour, you will be dropped back at your hotel.
We were very happy with the whole cruise. A huge day but well worth it. Would definitely recommend it to anyone travelling to New Zealand. Have been on a few cruises but this... Anita Townsend
Being in NZ for only a short time we had to think hard about what we did: choosing Doubtful was absolutely the right choice. Organization was excellent and the Real Journeys... Mrs Helen F Simmons
