Overview

The historic French whaling village of Akaroa in the Banks Peninsula is a 90-minutes drive from Christchurch. Akaroa is the site of the only attempted settlement by the French in New Zealand. Their influence is still evident in this charming town - look for French street names, quaint historical buildings and inspired cuisine.

Enjoy a relaxing Akaroa Harbour Cruise on the Canterbury Cat as you cruise around an extinct volcanic crater and see the majestic scenery and stunning wildlife of New Zealand. Alternatively, you can play golf on the picturesque Akaroa Golf Course as well.

Itinerary

You will be picked up from your hotel in Christchurch and taken in an air-conditioned luxury vehicle for a sightseeing tour to Akaroa. An English-speaking guide will accompany you on this tour.

Travel to Akaroa via Sign of Takahe, Sign of Kiwi, Governers bay, Gebbies Pass, Lake Forsyth and Little River.

Stop at the Hill Top to experience panoramic views of Akaroa Harbour.

Visit the cheese factory at Barry's Bay and sample some fine New Zealand cheese.

Lunch will be taken at Bully Hayes, a popular restaurant on the waterfront in the heart of Akaroa. It offers a wide choice of New Zealand cuisine.

Following lunch you have the choice of either a two-hour cruise on the Canterbury Cat exploring the delights of Akaroa Harbour and sighting dolphins, penguins and seals, or a game of golf can be arranged on the picturesque Akaroa Golf Course.

On the return journey to Christchurch, a stop will be made at Birdling Flat on the Kaitorete Spit. This stony beach at the entrance to Lake Forsyth provides a commanding view of the southern facing cliffs of Banks Peninsula. An interesting selection of pebbles and semi-precious stones can be found on the beach.

At the end of this memorable tour, you will be dropped back at your hotel in Christchurch.
