Overview

Mysore is famous for silk, sandalwood and incence, art and of course the Palace. The erstwhile capital of the Wodeyar dynasty, Mysore is also known as the 'City Of Palaces', many of which are excellent examples of the Dravidian style of architecture. The imposing Mysore Palace is impressive and colourful: the rooms and the floor tiles are covered with colours like turquoise blue, magenta, golden yellow and leaf green. The palace has many interesting paintings adorning the walls – some done by noted painter Raja Ravi Varma. Another prominent landmark in the city is the Chamundi Hill. At the crest of this hill is Sri Chamundeshwari Temple that dates back to the 11th century.

Coorg (locally called Kodagu) is a region of scattered post-card pretty villages and towns. Coorg is also famous for coffee plantations and the brave Kodava or Coorgi people who are a martial community. Often referred to as the ‘Scotland of India’ because of its hills, picturesque towns and mist-covered slopes, Coorg is a must-visit on a trip to India.

The Fort and palaces were destroyed when the British defeated Tipu Sultan, but the ramparts, temples and other structures still stand.

Then drive up to Chamundi Hill to see the Chamundeshwari Temple which has seven-storey, 40 metre high gopuram (gateway tower). The entrance is intricately decorated in the Dravidian style and has a small statue of Hindu God Ganesha on the doorway. The doorway is silver-plated and has the images of the Goddess in different forms on it. You can see panoramic views of the city from the temple. On the way down from the temple, stop and see the famous 5 metre-high statue of Nandi bull (Hindu God Shiva’s vehicle), carved out of a single rock.
