This tour is designed for those who love to hike and want to explore more of Iceland’s picturesque natural beauty away from the more populated Golden Circle tours. Here, you’ll be guided away from the city, through the mountains to Southern Iceland’s grasslands, to several stunning waterfalls, and to the top of Sólheimajökull Glacier.
After hiking across the massive glacier, with its own caves, crevices, and ice formations, you’ll move along a beautiful black sand beach with the churning, powerful Atlantic ocean on one side and the steady, massive Mýrdalsjökull and Eyjafjallajökull glacial formation on the other.
Your tour begins when your guide picks you up at your hotel in Reykjavik. You’ll then follow the Thousand Rivers mountain road out of the city, crossing the tumbling river many times as you pass Hellisheiði Mountain along its scenic path. You’ll eventually reach the grassy lowlands on Iceland’s southern coast and stop at the famously picturesque Seljalandsfoss Waterfall. Here you can walk directly behind the 60 meter cascade of falling water, stretch your legs, and then continue your journey towards Sólheimajökull Glacier.
This glacier, one of Iceland’s best for exploring, is a magnificent structure full of huge ice ridges, tunnels, and spiralling sinkholes. On a clear day you can see the infamous Eyjafjallajökull volcano known for its 2010 eruptions and whose ashes can still occasionally be seen buried in the ice below. Before you hike the glacier your expert guide will provide you with crampons – spikes designed for the soles of your shoes to make walking on the glacier easy and safe – as well as other special glacier gear designed for your protection and comfort.
You’ll eat a packed lunch out in nature atop the glacier to provide energy for the rest of your journey back down the glacier’s other side as you follow its river towards Iceland’s unique black sand beaches. You journey follows the strip of beach towards the Skógar waterfall, with the vast expanses of the North Atlantic lining one side and the Mýrdalsjökull and Eyjafjallajökull Glaciers covering the cliffs on the other. The beach converges with the road when you reach the falls, another 60-meter drop you can climb for a better view of the peaceful yet awe-inspiring landscape around you.
At the end of your adventure, you’ll be taken back to Reykjavik, arriving at about 6:00pm for an evening spent as you wish.
