Itinerary

You will be picked up from your hotel and taken in an air-conditioned coach or minivan for a sightseeing tour of the ancient Water Town of Zhujiajiao. An English-speaking tour guide will accompany you on this tour.

The drive from the suburbs of Shanghai to this charming, ancient water village takes about one hour.

On arrival at Zhujiajiao, set out with your guide to explore this town that has retained much of its looks and architecture from the Ming and Qing period. Small rivers crisscross the town, with 36 old bridges on them. Over 1,000 houses first built in Ming and Qing dynasties stand along both sides of nine narrow streets.

Walk on the stone path which is said to date back some hundreds of years and which still remains intact.

There are a lot of other things that you can see at Zhujiajiao:

The well-preserved Ming and Qing architecture, and ancient stone bridges and streets.

An ancestral Pottery and Jade Hall which has large collections of the stoneware, pottery and jade used by the local people. Also see the Hall of Paddy and Rice Custom.

The quaint Chinese medicine shop that contains all sorts of herbal medicines.

The Baoguo monastery, built during the Ming dynasty on Dianshan Lake. Nearby is a 1000-year old gingko tree and marble statue.

A post office, built during the Qing dynasty and which was one of the main post offices of Shanghai.

The Kezhi garden, considered to be one of the best traditional Chinese gardens. Nearby are the Silk Road Museum and the Buddha Temple.

Fangsheng Bridge, which is a stone-arch bridge built during the mid-Qing era. The imposing bridge is a landmark structure of Zhujiajiao and offers panoramic views of the entire town.

During your tour, you will also enjoy a leisurely boat trip through the narrow water alleys of this ancient town.

Zhujiajiao is also home to two impressive temples, which add to the charm and historic significance of the village.

After a few hours of sightseeing in Zhujiajiao, you’ll make a stop to shop for silk. Learn how silk making became a major industry in China. Then bargain for clothes, accessories, quilts and handmade rugs.
