Overview

Lama Temple (Yonghegong), or Palace of Peace and Harmony is an elegant temple and lamasery. Once the residence of a royal court, this vibrantly ornamented temple is one of the largest and most important Tibetan Buddhist monasteries in the world. Built in 1694 AD, Lama Temple houses tranquil gardens, superb sculptures and a veritable treasury of Buddhist art.

See the most important living treasure in China; the Giant Panda in the Beijing Zoo. The zoo houses other rare Chinese animals such as the Golden Monkey, and an extensive collection from around the world from polar bears to kangaroos. Visit an ancient altar built in 1420 AD to memorialise “the divine farmer” Shennong, an emperor from thousands of years ago who taught his people the art of agriculture.

See the rich history of Beijing come alive on this tour.

Itinerary

You will be picked up from your hotel and taken in an air-conditioned coach for a sightseeing tour of Beijing. An English-speaking tour guide will accompany you on this tour. The first visit of the day is the Lama Temple. Explore this serene temple, featuring five large halls and five courtyards with beautifully decorated archways, upturned eaves and carved details. It houses a treasury of Buddhist art, including sculptured images of gods, demons and Buddhas, as well as Tibetan-style murals. Hall of Harmony and Peace (Yonghegong) is the main palace of Yonghe Lamasery and inside three bronze Buddhas are displayed.

Continue to the Beijing Zoo, and visit the Panda Garden, home of the adorable giant panda. Here you can see other endangered species such as the Golden Monkey as well.

After a delicious lunch in a local restaurant, you will travel to the Altar of the God of Agriculture (Xiannongtan) built in 1420 AD to memorialise “the divine farmer” Shennong, an emperor from thousands of years ago who taught his people the art of agriculture. Inside is a museum documenting the rise of Chinese architecture and agriculture in ancient times.

At the end of the tour, you will be dropped back at your hotel in Beijing.
