Discover the world-famous opal fields of Coober Pedy and Andamooka, with scenery that looks like something you might expect in the Wild West. Explore the desert regions of the Outback, the Great Salt Lakes and the magnificent Flinders Ranges which has a rich variety of wildlife. Meet locals and learn more about the history and culture of this region whilst travelling through some of the most diverse countryside on earth.

This tour will take you inside an opal mine and also give you the opportunity to stay at an underground hotel!

Itinerary

Day 1: Adelaide- Roxby Downs You will be picked up from your hotel in Adelaide and taken to the airport in a 4WD in time to board your flight to Olympic Dam (air ticket included). Upon arrival at Olympic Dam, a mining centre, you will be picked up from the airport and will travel in a 4WD to Roxby Downs and the world-famous opal mining area of Andamooka. Listen to your driver-guide tell you more about this region as you tour the region.

There will be a break for lunch at a suitable place and time.

Meet local people and later enjoy a tour of an underground working mine. You might just get lucky and find some precious opal!

Check into the Roxby Downs Motor Inn which is located in the heart of Roxby Downs and has 52 air-conditioned rooms with queen size beds, TV, mini bar and tea and coffee making facilities. The Inn has a multi-cuisine restaurant and an outdoor swimming pool among other facilities.

Enjoy dinner (payable direct) and spend the night at the Inn. Day 2: Roxby Downs- Coober Pedy After breakfast, travel south for a short tour of Woomera, a small town which is the famous site for rocket launches in Australia. Continue and see the region around Island Lagoon and Lake Hart before following the Stuart Highway to the famous opal region of Coober Pedy. Enjoy a tour of this town and the underground mines.

There will be a break for lunch at a suitable place and time.

You will also have the chance to browse through retail outlets where you may shop for souvenirs before you proceed to the famous Desert Cave underground hotel. Experience unique dug-out style living at this hotel which offers ‘below ground’ accommodation. The hotel has 50 suites of which 19 are underground. All the rooms have a colour TV, a mini bar, tea and coffee making facilities, refrigerator and an internet access port. The hotel also has a multi-cuisine restaurant and a café and the world’s only underground bar! It also has a pool and a spa.

Enjoy dinner (payable direct) and spend the night at the hotel. Day 3: Coober Pedy- Blinman After breakfast, board your 4WD and travel across the Outback visiting some of its major attractions. Cross the Moon Plains and the longest fence in the world, the Dog Fence which stretches more than 5,300 kilometres from the Great Australian Bight to the foothills of Queensland’s Bunya Mountains. Drive through Anna Creek cattle station, a large cattle station spread over an area of 24,000 square kilometres. See Lake Cadibarrawirracanna before continuing to William Creek one of Australia's smallest towns.

Travel along the Oodnadatta Track (Old Ghan railway line) and see the fascinating water volcanoes and Australia's largest salt lake, Lake Eyre which is considered to be ten times the size of Singapore!

There will be a break for lunch at a classic Outback Pub, the Marree Hotel in Marree. Once known as Hergott Springs, Marree was a staging post for the large camel trains carrying wool and supplies in the early days which were ultimately replaced by the Ghan Railway.

Continue in your vehicle towards the Flinders Ranges and proceed to the highest town in South Australia – Blinman.

Check into Blinman Hotel which dates back to 1869 and still retains many of its old features including slate floors and dominating fireplaces. The hotel offers 17 ensuite hotel and motel style rooms with satellite television, air conditioning, heating and all have queen size beds. The hotel has a bar and a multi-cuisine restaurant that serves dishes using Kangaroo meat and native fruits and herbs.

Enjoy dinner (payable direct) and spend the night at the hotel. Day 4: Blinman- Adelaide After breakfast, travel through the picturesque tree-lined Brachina Gorge and appreciate the ever-changing landscape as your guide tells you more about Emus, Kangaroos and reptiles for which this region is home. This region is famous for the rare and beautiful yellow-footed Rock Wallaby which, if you are lucky, you may spot. This region is also famous for fossils that date back 630 million years. Many species of birds such as the ringed-neck Parrot and the Wedge-tail eagle, Australia's largest bird of prey, are also found here.

Continue along the gentler slopes of the Flinders Ranges and the beautiful green vineyards of Clare Valley as you make your way back to Adelaide. You will be dropped off at your hotel where the tour ends.
