Washington DC, the capital of the United States of America, not only caters to people interested in the country’s political history, but also art lovers. Reflecting the aspirations of its country in all aspects, the capital city has one of the largest reservoirs of Western art in the National Gallery of Art.

Learn about the artworks displayed in the West wing of the gallery with the help of an expert English speaking guide. As you move through the galleries of the West Building, you will view its earliest masterworks including the only Leonardo da Vinci creation that resides in the Western Hemisphere. The collection spans the 13th and 14th century works through to 19th-century American art collections. The guide will bring the artworks to life as he/she will narrate stories and share anecdotes.

In addition to this, this is the only group tour that includes a guided walking trip to the Sculpture Garden situated outside the gallery.

Itinerary

For the National Gallery of Art Guided Tour, meet your guide at the main entrance of National Gallery of Art, which boasts one of the country’s largest collections of Western art and sculpture. Found in 1941, the museum was started with a collection of 141 artworks and has grown to house more than 100,000 objects, spanning from the Middle Ages to the present.

The gallery is divided into two buildings – the West and the East buildings. The West wing is home to the majority of permanent collection and showcases the works of Renaissance and Baroque masters like Rembrandt, Rubens, El Greco, Goya and Raphael among others. It also holds a brilliant range of 19th century paintings by masters like Van Gogh, Monet, Cezanne, Reynolds et al. The modern architecture of East wing gives a clear idea of the artworks displayed in this part of the gallery, but is currently closed. Your English speaking guide will ensure that you get acquainted with the artworks and the artists behind it. You will get interesting scoop about tortured artists and art-world scandal from your guide.

This exclusive tour also includes a visit to the Sculpture Garden outside the museum containing incredible works of outdoor art surrounded by a circular fountain that's used as an ice rink during winters. Your guide will walk you through the unusual works of Barry Flanagan, who modeled a rabbit as his take on Rodin’s The Thinker and Louise Bourgeois’s huge Spider among other works.

Your tour ends in front of the Cascade Waterfall located in the Concourse area on the Ground Floor in front of the Cascade Café.

This is a physically challenging tour that involves a considerable amount of walking and stairs. For this reason, we do not recommend this tour for customers with health conditions and recommend comfortable shoes for all guests.
