You will be picked up by air-conditioned coach (vans will be used for smaller groups) from your Phoenix/Scottsdale hotel for this Grand Rails tour. You will be accompanied by a guide that knows the area well.
Take a scenic drive on Route 66 early in the morning, through the harsh beauty of the Sonoran Desert. Heed the advice of folk legend Bob Dylan, who crooned “if you ever plan to motor west…Get your kicks on Route 66.”
Arrive in Williams, where you’ll board the historic Grand Canyon Railroad.
Each car of this Arizona railroad - which made its maiden voyage in 1901 - has been restored to its original state, and the crew members all have anecdotes to share about the train and its many journeys.
Enjoy a memorable 2-hour trip through open plains with mountain views and past crystal lakes embroidered with pine forests.
Ride the train into the Grand Canyon, where you’ll have free time to explore this natural wonderland, which stretches for 277 miles, reaches a depth of nearly a mile, and showcases some 2 billion years of geological history. You’ll also have time to lunch on your own (payable direct).
Later, take a bus tour to the Mather Viewpoint for magnificent photo opportunities while your guide fills you in on the ecology and geology of the area.
The stones and sand in the Grand Canyon give off brown, yellow, and red hues that are amplified by a striking blue sky and wayward tufts of clouds. The landscape is otherworldly, like the surface of some distant planet waiting to be discovered.
You will be returned to your Phoenix/Scottsdale hotel at tour’s end
