Overview

Trivandrum, now called Thiruvananthapuram, is the capital of Kerala and located at the south-western tip of India. It is bound by the Arabian Sea on the west and the state of Tamil Nadu on the east. The wooded highlands in the eastern and north-eastern borders give it some enchanting picnic spots and a long and beautiful shoreline. Internationally renowned beaches, historic monuments, backwater stretches and a rich cultural heritage make this district a much sought-after tourist destination.

Thiruvananthapuram literally means 'the abode of Anantha', the snake God. Hindu God Vishnu is said to rest on this huge serpent. The main attraction of the city, not surprisingly then, is the Sri Padmanabhaswamy Temple. Dedicated to Vishnu (also known as Padmanabha) reclining on the snake Anantha, the imposing gopuram (gateway tower) and intricate sculptures of the temple make it a very popular tourist attraction.

Itinerary

You will be picked up from your hotel and accompanied by a local, English-speaking guide, travel in an air-conditioned vehicle as you go sightseeing in Trivandrum. You will visit:

• Sri Padmanabhaswamy Temple: This 260-year old temple has a gopuram that rises 30 metres in the sky and intricately carved pillars which are beautiful.

• Napier Museum: This is an art and natural history museum which houses a collection of archaeological and historic artifacts, bronze idols, ancient ornaments, a temple chariot and ivory carvings.

• Chitralayam Art Gallery: See works by renowned painters Raja Ravi Varma and Nicholas Roerich as well as examples of Mughal and Tanjore art.

Sri Moolamthirunal Shasti Purthi Memorial (State Handicraft Institute): See fine samples of handicrafts over here.

You will also see Zoological Gardens, Reptile House, Observatory, Kanakakunnu Palace. After your sightseeing tour, you will be dropped back to your hotel where the tour ends.
