A visit to the beautiful and quiet town of Tetuan in Morocco is truly an interesting and stimulating experience. Tetuan is the only Moroccan port on the Mediterranean coast. Located about 60 kilometres from Tangier, the city has had a rich and tumultuous past.
It has been ruled by the Spanish, French and the Arabs at different times in its history. This is evident in the street signs and the languages that the locals speak. French, Spanish and Arabic are widely spoken.
The city has a beautiful setting with the Rif Mountains forming a dramatic backdrop. Within the white-walled houses are beautifully tiled and carved ceilings and walls. The beauty and style reflect the Alhambra of Granada, Spain.
Tetouan may not be as well known as some of Morocco’s other cities but its beauty, setting and relatively low tourist population make it worthwhile visiting.
The tour of Tetuan begins with a morning pick up from your designated spot, please be at your chosen pick-up point at least 10 minutes before the scheduled departure time.
Accompanied by an English-speaking guide, you will travel in an air-conditioned coach along the coastal road to the southern port town of Algeçiras. The journey will take approximately 3½ hours with a stop en route.
On arrival at Algeçiras you will cross over to Cueta – a small and attractive Spanish enclave on the Moroccan coast - by a fast catamaran ferry. The ferry crossing is a time to relax and enjoy the sea breeze as the trip takes about 45 minutes each way.
On disembarking at Cueta, a local guide will take you by bus across the border and into Morocco. The coach drives along the coastal road for about half an hour before turning inland to the picturesque Moroccan town of Tetuan. The coach arrives at Tetuan between 1000h (10:00am) and 1100h (11:00am).
On arrival into the modern part of Tetuan, you will be taken around on a tour of this ancient and interesting city.
Some of the sights you will see here are:
The Medina (old town) of Tetuan is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The medieval inner-city incorporates the traditional Moorish/North African styles and retains all the characteristics of the region. You can see the locals of Tetuan in their traditional costume, the winding narrow lanes, tiny shops, lovely serene mosques, bakeries (with enticing aromas) and other time-honoured businesses will surely take you back to a far different time.
The Royal Palace, located at the Mohammed V Square, is situated just outside the Medina.
The Museum of Arts is another fascinating place to visit, filled with an interesting collection of Moroccan art.
The city is famous for its low white houses and traditional skills and crafts like weaving, jewellery design and leather works. You will also get a demonstration of herbal medicines and cosmetics on a visit to a traditional herbalist.
During the course of your tour there will be a break for some lunch in a typically decorated Moroccon restaurant in town. Waiters will serve you soup, couscous with chicken & vegetables and a typical sticky pastry for dessert (vegetarian option available). Drinks are not included but water, soft drinks, wine and beer can purchased with the meal. There is live musical entertainment in the restaurant to accompany your meal.
After the tour of the city, the coach will begin the return journey back to Malaga in Spain. The tour spends approximately 6 hours in Morocco, of those 5 hours is spent in exploring Tetuan.
The return leg of the journey from Tetuan begins between 1500h (3:00pm) and 1600h (4:00pm). It will follow the same route back to the original departure point, arriving back between 2100h - 2200h (9:00pm -10:00pm).
