After pick-up from designated point, you will be taken to Muelle de Los Cristianos, where you will board Naviera Armas, the ferry which will take you to San Sebastián de la Gomera, the main city of La Gomera island.
The Naviera Armas takes around an hour to reach San Sebastian from Los Cristianos. It is a comfortable ship with a big terrace on the upper deck and a lot of bars and salons inside.
On arrival at San Sebastián de la Gomera, you will board a vehicle for your tour of La Gomera. This lovely island is the second smallest in the Canary Islands group. It is unspoilt and much loved by walkers and nature enthusiasts. Botanists are drawn to La Gomera by its rich plant life and the number of species unique to the island.
First stop on your tour is the Parque Nacional de Garajonay, a National Park and UNESCO World Heritage Site. The park provides the best example of Laurisilva, a type of cloud forest that covered almost all of Europe millions of years ago.
In Laurisilva, the trees are watered by the mist which sometimes covers the top of the island, especially in winter. They are swathed in mosses and lichens creating an amazing atmosphere.
Another attractive feature of the Park is the dramatic rock formations found there. These are former volcanoes sculpted by erosion into amazing shapes.
You will make a stop at Mirador de Agando to view the imposing cliffs. If weather conditions are favorable, you will also stop at Mirador de Vallehermoso to photograph this beautiful green valley.
Between 1300h (1:00pm) and 1400h (2:00pm), you will enjoy lunch in the ‘Las Rosas’ or ‘Agulo’ districts of La Gomera. The meal will include: Canary vegetable soup with ‘gofio’, meat and rice, bread, ‘mojo’ sauce, ice cream, fruit, wine and water.
‘Gofio’ is roasted ground maize meal mixed with sugar. Mojo is the traditional Canary Islands sauce – a versatile combination of spices, herbs and flavorings such as garlic, paprika, coriander, olive oil, lemon or other ingredients.
While in the restaurant, you will have the opportunity to learn about Silbo Gomero, the unique whistling language of La Gomera. This whistled speech was invented by the original inhabitants of the island, the Guanches. Silbo Gomero was adopted by the Spanish settlers in the 16th century and survived after the Guanches died out.
The route will continue through the huge and fertile Hermigua Valley, planted with bananas, vines and vegetable, before returning to San Sebastián de La Gomera. In San Sebastian, you will discover the links between Christopher Columbus and La Gomera, who called at the port several times before heading off to the Americas.
You will hear the story of Christopher Columbus and his romance with Beatriz de Bobadilla who later became the wife of a tyrannical governor of La Gomera. You will see Casa de Colon, where Columbus is said to have stayed during his visits to La Gomera, Casa de la Agunada where Columbus is said to have taken water from the well and La Torre del Conde, an important military building dating back to 1447.
At the end of this fascinating tour, you will board the ferry again for the return journey to Tenerife. After arriving at Los Cristianos you will be driven back to your hotel.
