Madeira Birdwatching Eco Tour

US$ 38.33 Price per person from View price guide

Highlights

  • The scarlet of the Rhododendrons dotting the bushes is a visual treat!
  • Watch exotic flowers and birds in a typical manor garden.

Overview

This tour explores the flowering South Eastern part of the Madeira Island. Enjoy a scenic drive to a typical Quinta, a sort of small park with a manor house, where you may observe exotic and endemic flora and birdlife. Follow it up with a visit to a water stream mouth in the city of Madeira, to observe some more birds such as little egrets, turnstones and waxbills to name a few.

As you drive along, you will notice a completely different landscape, much more barren and brownish than the rest of the island. Besides admiring the North and South of the island from the same point, you may also amuse yourself with the Berthelot's Pipit posing for your photos, with the purple blooms of the cardoon plant in the background!

Itinerary

You will be picked up in an air-conditioned vehicle from your hotel or similar accommodation in Funchal or Canico or Câmara de Lobos. Accompanied by an English-speaking nature guide, you will be taken on a scenic drive to the surrounding villages of Machico.

First, you will meet the Southeast of Madeira where several endemic bird species and subspecies enjoy their habitat with a wonderful view. From sea level to up to 120 meters of altitude you have the chance to observe some migrant birds, like little egrets and turnstones, the funny Berthelot's Pipit, the shy Rock Sparrow and the Canaries and Goldfinches singing together to celebrate the spectacular sightseeing of the eastern tip of Madeira.

Going up to a fresher spot the Buzzards, Kestrels and Swifts will watch you from the blue sky. Reaching the 800 meters of altitude the Madeira Firecrest and the bluish Chaffinch will brighten up your day with the curious Robins and the hidden Greenfinches controlling your moves.

This tour is mainly by car with short walks on the spots to look for the species. It is ideal for everyone who likes to join sightseeing with some nature details as birds, plants and butterflies.

After enjoying the scenery and watching a variety of birds, you will be dropped back to your hotel/accommodation.
