  • Drive your own sled and go on an overnight safari into deep forests
  • Experience the beauty of the Norwegian-Swedish border mountains

Live your winter dream, experience unspoilt nature and enjoy an unforgettable dog sledding adventure in Norway! Plan a package with the Villmark Lodge in Ljørdalen and experience dog sledding first-hand. A three day introductory course in dog sledding will teach you the essentials of handling huskies and sled, harnessing and taking care of your assigned dogs and building a good rapport with your team.

After the introductory course, you will be all set for a three day overnight safari. Cover a total distance of approx 150 kilometres and spend the nights in a basic but cosy cabin in the mountains. The tour leads you right into the magnificent landscape of the Norwegian-Swedish border mountains. Cross frozen lakes and rivers and enjoy driving over endless plains and gently rounded mountain tops.

Itinerary

Day 1:

Make your own way either by car directly to Ljørdalen or by coach transfer (to be booked separately) from Oslo City Bus Terminal or Airport Oslo-Gardermoen to Trysil and further to Ljørdalen. Lying right at the Swedish border and in the heart of a spectacular mountain area, the tiny village of Ljørdalen is situated 37 kilometres from Norway’s most famous and biggest skiing area, Trysil.

In Ljørdalen you will be warmly welcomed at the Villmark Lodge. Villmark Lodge is a cosy resort accommodation built in perfect harmony with its natural surroundings and out of local building material, timber and glass. The Lodge consists of 10 free-standing cottages (double houses) with 2 private apartments each and a central building with reception, a cosy restaurant with fireplace, bar, billiard table. Furthermore, the resort features a centrally located complimentary sauna. The spacious apartments are suitable for up to 4 guests. They are furnished in typical Norwegian style and offer a private entrance, 2 bedrooms (1 double / 1 bunk bed), a separate bathroom, a cosy living area, TV, and an open gallery. Bed linen, towels and cleaning fee are included. Pets are welcome.

Your package includes daily breakfast, lunch package and dinner, throughout your stay. Day 2:

After breakfast, you will be taken to the Villmark Husky Farm situated just a few kilometres outside the village of Ljørdalen in the hills. Your dog sledging tours start from the Villmark Husky Farm, it will take you about 10-15 minutes to reach here. An experienced multilingual guide speaking English, Norwegian and German, will give you a comprehensive introduction into dog sledding. You will be able to familiarise yourself with the dogs, learn their names, harnessing and handling of the dogs and the sled. Soon you will be able to harness the dogs by yourself and drive your own dog sled on a short tour. After a memorable day at the husky farm, return to your lodge and spend the night.

Add some more excitement to your adventure safari by rustling up your own lunch during breakfast at the lodge.

Day 3 and 4:

The guide will give you a great insight into the world of dog sledding. Slowly you will become a team with your assigned dogs and realise that it is the special relationship with the dogs you develop over the days that becomes the greatest of your experiences. Step by step, the length and level of the tours will be increased. Accompanied by your guide, you will drive your own sled with 4-6 huskies on prepared trails through the Norwegian winter wonderland. At the end of the day, return to your lodge and spend the night.

Day 5: Dog Sledding Safari (approx. 25-50 kilometres) at the edge of Fulufjell National Park

After learning all essentials on dog sledding during your introductory course on the first three days, you are well prepared to go on a 3-day overnight safari. The trail is an ambitious one and leads you right into a spectacular scenery of pristine nature and wildlife reserves that continue into the nearby Fulufjell National Park. Across the timber-line, you will enjoy the immense vastness of the highland plains and the stunning views of the surrounding valleys.

Spend the night at a very basic but cosy cabin up in the mountains with wood-burning stove, but without running water and electricity. You will be provided with sleeping bags during the safari. The accommodation will be in a shared dormitory with an outside bathroom.

Day 6: Dog Sledding Safari (approx. 25-50 kilometres) at the edge of Fulufjell National Park

The cabin in the unspoilt wilderness of the mountains will be your base camp for one of the most spectacular safaris at the edge of Fulufjell National Park. Discover the amazing beauty of this winter scenery right at the Norwegian-Swedish border. In the afternoon, return to your cabin in the mountains and enjoy a great evening around the fireplace.

Day 7: Dog Sledding Safari (approx. 25-50 kilometres) at the edge of Fulufjell National Park
