Activity Overview

Take a guided walk into the bush on Kapiti Island and go bird spotting in the sanctuary. A 15 minute boat ride off the Paraparaumu beach in Wellington, the island is a closed sanctuary, protected by the Department of Conservation. Home to several endangered species of birds, Kapiti Island is a bird watcher’s paradise. As soon as you arrive at the island, you will be given a traditional welcome, followed by an introduction to Maori culture and customs by Maori guides. You might even want to choose one of the many walking trails that take you on a trek through slightly rougher terrain. Or you could take a walk through the older and more established Kapiti Nature Reserve where the tracks are steeper and the birdlife more varied. You can also take some time out to walk about on your own, and go exploring or snorkelling (you will need your own gear).

Itinerary

Board the return ferry to and from Paraparaumu-Kapiti Island. After being greeted on the island proceed to an introductory talk on a guided bush walk (preferably with moderate energy), bird viewing and interpretation, historical and Maori Cultural interpretation by Maori guides. Time available for independent walking or snorkeling in the Marine Reserve.
