Overview

Enter an amazing world of mountains, glaciers, river valleys and alpine lakes on this full-day walk in Mount Aspiring National Park.

The adventure begins in the lush beech forests of the lower slopes. Follow a track through a beautiful valley where a sparkling river rushes around mossy boulders.

As the trail climbs upward you will see cascading waterfalls, precipitous cliffs and glacial moraines set in a landscape of incomparable drama. The Rob Roy Glacier will be clearly visible and you may see huge chunks of ice breaking off and crashing to the valley floor.

If you love mountains and are interested in geology, glaciers, wildlife or photography, then this walk is for you.

Itinerary

For the Matukituki Valley & Rob Roy Glacier Guided Walk, you will be collected from your Queenstown or Wanaka hotel in the morning and driven to the Matukituki Valley west of Lake Wanaka in the Mount Aspiring National Park.

Accompanied by your local guide, you will set out along a riverside track through beautiful beech forests with a luxuriant understory of ferns and mosses. Look up at the snow-capped mountains and you will see glacial moraines, magnificent crags and waterfalls cascading down steep cliff faces. On reaching the tree-line you will be treated to spectacular views of the Rob Roy Glacier.

During the walk your guide will tell you about the natural features and the plants and animals you see on the way. The walk is 10 km in length and takes around 5 hours. The track is well-used but slightly uneven and rises to an elevation of 5-600 m.

At lunch time, you can enjoy a picnic against a backdrop of glorious mountain scenery.

At the end of a magical day in the mountains, you will be dropped back at your hotel in Wanaka or Queenstown.
